The Seminoles and runaway slaves
from parts of America often attacked the Georgia landowners and then fled back
into Florida. To end these Seminole raids, General Andrew Jackson and his army
came to Florida in 1817 and signed a treaty with the Florida and US. Spanish minister Do Luis
de Onis and US Secretary of State John Quincy Adams signed the Florida Purchase
Treaty. Spain agrees to surrender the remainder of its old province of Florida
to the United States. Spain had been worn out by the Peninsular war in Europe
and needed to rebuild its authority and presence in its colonies. So the Spain
and US signed an Admas – Onis treaty in the year 1819 which set out a boundary
between the New Spain (now Mexico) and US. It was effective in 1821
