Magna hot enough to melt rocks pushes up from the center of the earth to the crust level. In an earthquake, the crust level shifts, and can create that opening the lava needs to "be free" the lave flows out, hardens into new ground and can create a mountain ( i think) (but lava also works its way up actual mountains.)
