Repressed thoughts
Freud described repression as a defense mechanism to protect oneself from unsettling thoughts.  He used psychoanalysis to reach the repressed thoughts and help his clients to work through them.  During psychoanalysis, patients would "free associate" and then make connections to repressed thoughts or memories.
