The part of the peripheral nervous system that controls glandular activity and the muscles of internal organs is called the autonomic nervous system. The autonomic nervous system supplies smooth muscle and glands and therefore influences the function of internal organs such as urination, pupillary response, digestion, heart rate, respiratory rate, and sexual arousal. The autonomic nervous system is made up of two sets of nerves which are the sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous systems.
