In the 1920s Western powers began to expand their influence in the Middle East primarily due to the fact that oil was becoming an increasingly important good and they know that without oil they would be doomed while at the same time the Middle east had plenty of oil.
As oil was discovered, it quickly became a necessity for the entire world. Thus, having possession of as much of it as possible was good; therefore, Western powers expanded to the Middle East.
