It taught us the African Americans who served in WWII were
brave and capable soldiers just like their white counterparts. They too fought hard and risk their lives to
win the war. It is only fitting they too
be awarded the same honors as white soldiers.
It was sad that no black soldier was award the Medal of Honor during
WWII despite their bravery and sacrifice.
Vernon Baker was posthumously awarded the Medal of Honor by President
Bill Clinton on January 13, 1997.
