Debussy's 10 minute long prelude to the Afternoon of a Faun is programmatic, based on a poem by Stéphane Mallarmé. In the poem, a faun (a half-man, half-goat creature, according to ancient Greek legend) wakes up to revel in sensuous memories of forest nymphs.
