This was the first amendment in which the word gender was used in the constitution  and declared the voting right for all male citizens who were twenty one year old. And the fifteenth amendment confirmed that the right to vote could not be denied on the basis of a person’s race.

The  fifteen amendment was criticized by women’s rights activists as it allowed the right to vote only to the men only and they were afraid if this word is inserted in the constitution it would take almost a century to remove it. The activists were bitterly divided whether to support amendment or not.
