The Meiji Restoration period of Japan's history produced many great reforms following the decline of the Tokugawa Shogun. Some of these included a government system that was highly centralized, bureaucratic and designed with a legislature divided into two houses filled with elected Parliament officials. In order to support Japan's economic and industrial development, the Meiji period also saw government support for industry including a transportation and communication system to service the state. The Meiji administration also advocated for education, open to all, freed from the feudal restrictions of previous decades.
