The factor that most contributed to the huge casualties in WWI was the new technology. WW1 happened during a time of huge industrialization and mass-production. This led to the creation of new weapons and warfare technology in general. Many innovations killed a large number of people like grenades, poison gas, artillery, submarines, warplanes, and tanks.
