The purpose of the final paragraph in the Eugene Debs' statement to the court was to portray a better world through metaphor. Hope this helps :)
Eugene Debs was a candidate who run for president of the United States, representing the Socialist Party. He was a leader of the Labor movement, and a publicly opponent of taking the country to war. It was during a speech he gave, in 1918, that put hi under arrest, under the accusation of promoting anti-war speech. The last paragraph of his statement to court, had the purpose of portraying a better world through the use of metaphor. He gave the cross, an inanimate object, qualities that were referring to human nature, like bending. He did this to convey his message in a softer way, by using a literate method such as a metaphor.
