Sam Houston was also the President of the Republic of Texas.  He was elected twice (1936 & 1841) as the President of the the Republic of Texas. He was very instrumental in the defeat of the Mexicans, which resulted in the independence of Texas.  When Texas joined the Union he became a Senator.
