Jackson believed a state-based government where the federal government is minimal. Therefore he was a strict interpretationalist of the Constitution in which the federal government should only do what the Constitution allowed. However in practice he did not always follow this while president. He believed in the power of the common man and that property was not necessary for the right to vote. As a result Jacksonian Democrats were responsible for extending the vote to all white men regardless of property ownership.
