Hyperkalemia is a condition wherein there is an increased amount of potassium in the blood. The normal serum potassium level is 3.5-5.0 mmol/L. Anything below the specified range will result in hypokalemia and anything above it will yield to hyperkalemia. Our cells contain potassium and if there are health conditions that necessitate for potassium to go out of the cell and into the bloodstream, then hyperkalemia occurs. Hence, during hyperkalemia, the movement of potassium is from the cell to the bloodstream.
