Back in the days of discovery and global exploration of the seas, there was no Panama Canal that would let someone "sail through the Isthmus of Panama." The Panama Canal was first used in 1914. If Magellan had tried to go across Panama in the 16th century, they'd have had to somehow drag their ships across the land of the isthmus -- and that wouldn't work!
