The major is skeptical about war and has the mindset of a soldier

An important theme of modernism was disillusionment. Most modernist writers felt disillusioned in postwar America because of the destruction and devastating loss of human life. Ernest Hemingway represented this theme of disillusionment in his short story "In Another Country" through the character of the army major. The major’s character painted a bleak, disillusioned picture of war, through which there was no positive outcome, no matter what side won or lost. War represented loss to the major, and not even the technological advancements that helped heal serious wounds could convince the major otherwise.
