There are at least three primary functions that are performed by the epithelial tissue.Firstly it provides a great protective covering for all the tissues lying beneath it from radiation, toxins, physical trauma, desiccation and invasion of pathogens. Secondly it helps to regulate the exchange of chemicals between the body cavity and the tissues that lie underneath the epithelial tissues. It also helps in the secretion of the hormones in to the bloods. These are all major but primary functions of the epithelial tissues. From this we can easily understand the importance of the epithelial tissues.

Answer:

Epithelium tissue refers to the outer covering of all major parts of the body. It makes the outer layer of the skin, organs, blood vessels, as well as internal cavities.

The main functions of the epithelial tissues are secretion, protection, selective absorption, sensing, and transcellular transport.

Different shapes (cuboidal, columnar, and squamous) and arrangement (single or many layers) help the epithelial tissue to perform its functions.

For example, simple squamous epithelial is present at the coverings of a lung, heart, blood vessels, and lymphatic vessels. The single-layered structure helps in easy diffusion of materials across the cells, filtration, and in secreting lubricating substances.

Similarly, simple cuboidal cells are present in the duct and secretory portions of the body such as glands and tubules of the kidneys. This shape and arrangement help in absorption and secretion.
