Briefly explain ONE argument that supports the view that the Spanish-American War was caused by humanitarian concerns.
Cuba is suffering under harsh Spanish rule, and the United States is morally obligated to help Cuba shake off its oppressor. Also, the territories that the United States would gain in defeating Spain would benefit the nation, bringing investment opportunities for U.S. business interests, new markets for U.S. goods, and access to valuable resources.
Briefly explain ONE argument that supports the view that the Spanish-American War was caused by imperialist motives.
-American investments (sugar plantations) threatened in
Cuba, started war to protect American business
-After winning war, even though Filipinos wanted
independence like Cuba, the Treaty of Paris (1899) granted the Philippines to
the US on the premises that if the US didn't take them, another country would
and that they shouldn't pull out of the Philippines when the Filipino
insurgents were winning so as not to seem weak
-Didn't allow Filipinos the right to self-determination,
only looking out for America's trade interests
