Competition between species in an area of limited resources can have several consequences. On the extreme end, extinction could occur, but more likely there will need to be some adaptation by the species. Sometimes species find a way to share resources, other times a species may have to move to an area with more resources. This can disrupt the population and overall function of an ecosystem. If a species has limited resources it can also limit the opportunity for species growth and evolution.
