1. The pork-packing center was Chicago.
Chicago revolutionized the meat-packing industry and
business through its numerous factories and job opportunities which is why they
exported meat all around the United States. As much as 35000 cattle was shipped
yearly to Chicago, and it was only from one manufacturer.
2. The Railroad capital was Cincinnati.
It was an extremely important tactical position in the 19th and 20th century because it connected the North East and Midwest states with Southern states as well. The status of the city declined a bit as rail road travelling was reduced, but nowadays many of the buildings have been converted to museums about the rail road industry.
3. The Confederate capital was
Richmond.
At first the capital was in Montgomery in Alabama, but when the
confederate government was formed the capital was switched to Richmond, Virginia,
May 1861. Richmond was captured by Union forces in 1865 and soon the civil war
was ended completely. The Alabama confederate did not last for long, only a few
months.
4. First battle of Civil War was
at Fort Sumter.
This was a battle in which the confederate forces launched a
huge bombardment of Fort Sumter and blocked the ports in order to prevent any reinforcements
from coming. This was a decisive victory for the confederate forces because the
Union forces who were at fort Sumter had to surrender.
5. The first state to secede was
South Carolina.
It disliked the north and its policies and believed them to be
a threat of southern way of living and they decided to secede. This inspired
many other states to secede which is when they formed the confederacy. The secession
was mostly related to the presidential elections that were unfavorable for
politicians in Carolina.
6. The site of surrender is the
Appomattox Court House.
This is the place in Virginia where the army of General
Lee surrendered to General Grant in April 1865, which marked the ending of the
Civil War. The place now has a historical park that is visited by huge amounts
of history enthusiasts yearly. The surrender actually happened in a nearby
building but the courthouse is taken as the point of surrender.
7. The turning point of Civil War.
The turning point of the war was the battle of Gettysburg.
This is when
everything started going downhill for the Confederacy. Even though they had
victories in the beginning of the war and often it seemed like they would win,
after the battle of Gettysburg it started turning around and eventually the
Union won completely.
8. Lincoln assassination
happened in Ford's Theater.
This was a place where an actor, John Wilkes Booth,
assassinated Lincoln while he was watching a play, which was the first
assassination of a president in United States history. He did it because he
wanted to revive the confederacy and for the southerners to secede and Lincoln
was a problem for his cause.
9. Taken by Farragut was New
Orleans.
David Farragut was in charge of the USS Richmond which was a navy ship that managed to go through the confederate defenses and take New Orleans which was great for the Union since they got a piece of territory deep in the South around which they could orient and fight. The port was of great importance for providing reinforcements too.
