The U.S. government started tracing unemployment formally in the 1950s. The Great Depression occurred initially 1930s which had a drastic effect on the unemployment rate of 23.6 percent which was considered highest in modern times. The country’s lowest rate was 1.2 percent which happened in 1944 when millions of people were involved in the militia during World War II and the economy was overburdened. The lowest post-war rate was 2.9 percent in 1953.



Unemployment saw a decrease in the United States during the 1950s.
