then the total amount will be:
x+y=6
⇒y=6-x........i
Total amount to spend will be:
4x+3.5y=22......ii
substituting ii in i we get:
4x+3.5(6-x)=22
solving for x we get:
4x+21-3.5x=22
4x-3.5x=22-21
0.5x=1
x=1/0.5
x=2 pounds
y=6-x=6-2=4 pounds
Therefore the amount of nuts was x=2 pounds and the amount of dried fruits was y=4 pounds
