The cotton gin's first purpose when it was made by Eli Whitney in 1793 was to reduce the amount of slaves needed in the south to help pick cotton and churn out usable cotton for other nations and the North to use.
The cotton gin's usage
Even though the purpose was to lower the amount of slaves, instead, it allowed the slave market to expand, because the slave owners bought more slaves to help them produce more cotton, which would in turn make them more richer. It was used as a technology that simply increased more products, and with more workers, the southernors were able to produce more and more, making themselves more richer
