I feel that the middle part of this excerpt "Sounds like the 'Arabian Nights,'" said Mrs. White", "Her husband drew the talisman from his pocket, and all three burst into laughter", and "Don't you think you might wish for four pairs of hands for me." all imply that the couple were not serious about the power of the monkey's paw. They did not show reverence when referring to the talisman, and joked about it, despite the Sergeants warnings regarding the paws potential consequences.
