constantine was the son of flavius valerius constantius, (a roman army officer, ) and his partner Helena. his father eventually became caesar, the deputy emperor in the west,) in 293 AD. therefore, constantine was sent to the east, where he accelerated through the ranks so he could become a military tribune under emperors diocletian and galerius. it was important because constantine became the first christian emperor of the roman empire. he helped make christianity a lawful, proper religion. he even founded constantinople, a city that is now istanbul.
