The colonies in North America were incredibly valuable in increasing the wealth of European nations such as Britain, France, and Spain, since there was a vast amount of territory that was used to grow things such as tobacco, cotton, and sugar--all of which were in high demand in Europe.

Throughout world history, colonies operated for the benefit of European nations. This is especially true in North America. The benefits of having these colonies in North America can be explained by examining the relationship between Great Britain and the 13 colonies.

After establishing the 13 colonies, Great Britain set up a system of mercantilism. This mercantilist system was all about building the wealth of Great Britain. In order to do this, Great Britain:

1) set up a favorable balance of trade (exported more goods than they imported)

2)took natural resources from North America and then turned them into manufactured goods to be sold back to the colonists.

3) built up their supply of gold.

These three statements show the functions of the colonies and how they made Great Britain extremely wealthy, especially during the 17th century.
