Even though Carnegie donated nearly double of Rockefeller, I do think Tucker’s criticism was fair to a point. Although a society needs to further themselves, one man alone should not do it himself. The community needs to donate to things such as libraries, not just a single rich man.
Knowing about The New York Herald report on Andrew Carnegie giving away over $300 million as donation justifies Tucker’s criticism.
- As a supporter of social Darwinism helped Carnegie to become one of the wealthiest men in America.
- He was able to exploit workers by reducing their wages.
- On the other hand, he offered money to Scotland and Pittsburgh with the library.
- Carnegie had a double role, as he reduces workers wages to increase profits that further contributed to society.
- As a philanthropist, he set up a trust fund that led to the building of thousands of libraries and educational institutes.
Therefore we can conclude that it is justified to criticism him even he donated a large sum of money to the public.
