Algae and ferns both are green because they have chlorophyll in them that makes them appear green. This pigment traps the sunlight and helps in photosynthesis. This is the process by which green plants make their own food and hence called autotrophs.

The conclusion is that it is the chlorophyll pigment in ferns and algae that makes it look green.
