A coin is inside the cake, which is luck for the following year. You also eat the coin at the end of the meal.
Macedonia is a mountainous country in Europe where lots of Orthodox Christians live. Christmas is celebrated on January 7th because the Orthodox Church uses the 'Julian' Calendar but celebrations actually start on January 5th when people, especially children, do carols singing around their neighbors in exchange for fruits, nuts and coins. When singing finishes people gather around bonfires sometimes held in parks. Others hold smaller events where the local community gets together and traditional food is eaten such as the famous Macedonia cake with a coin inside.
