Why did the Spartan fear the Messenians?

Mostly because Messenians had more money, more power, and in general more wealth as a city state. For this reason, Spartans would be anhiliated in the case if they did not do anything and waited until the Messenians ammased a huge army. 

The war between Spartans and Messenians is the longest one in classical Greek history.
