The Punnett squares are used to determine the possible outcomes of a cross between two individuals. Across and outside the axes of the square, the genotypes of the gametes of these parents are listed. Inside of the square, all the possible combinations between these gametes should be listed. These combinations illustrate all the possible genotypes of the potential offsprings.
The genetic representation of the genes is known as genotype. The physical representation of the genotype is called phenotypes.
These are a few examples of the genotypes:-
- TT- tall
- tt - dwarf
Punnett square is discovered by Reginald Punnett and is in the shape of a rhombus. Punnett square is divided into different boxes on the basis of the genotypes. The representation of genotype in the square represents the phenotype of the plant.
For example:- TT- Tall.
