Slavery existed in the United
States even before it gained its independence. The founders included several
provisions in the Constitution to protect slavery. Presidents before Abraham
Lincoln were slaveholders, in exception of George Washington. Politicians who
were slaveholders or have interests in slavery held great power in the U.S
Congress, and they fought long and hard to preserve the institution of slavery
in the United States until the Civil War.
