It was a large portion of the breakup. The south felt increased pressure, especially with the election of a Republican, a party whose major platform was dedicated to the dissolution of slavery. The southern economy still depended on slavery to run the large plantations and large scale mechanization was still years away. The north on the other hand was highly industrialized and mechanized so didn't require a large bonded labor force.

The three major causes which led to the breakup of union in year 1861 were the passage of Kansas-Nebraska Act, Dred Scott case and South’s cultural influenced fanaticism on slavery.

The American civil war is known to be bloodiest war in the history of America and this war created differences between state to state in order to test will of the Union. There were various causes and reasons which led to the breakup of union in the year 1861 but there were three major reasons that stood out most.  

People who were part of American civil war believed that this war was fought only on the issue of slavery but in reality this war took place at several fronts but the three major reasons behind American civil war which led to breakup of the union were Kansas Nebraska Act, the verdict on the Dred Scott case and South’s take on Slavery. The civil war occurred due to various small events and if some of these events would not have occurred then there is possibility that civil war would not have taken place.
