The Dred Scott decision greatly impeded Congress’s efforts to find compromise and avoid war since it infuriated many people in the North who felt their own personal liberties would be violated, since now blacks who had established a way of life in the free north were no longer immune to the danger and possibility of being caught and re-sold.
