Answer: The reason why EDS cannot have more than one passenger is because they calculated how much fuel they would need to get to the planet. There was only enough fuel to power the ship with the weight of the cargo and the pilot. Therefore any other passengers aboard will exceed the weight limit and cause the ship to crash.
