√16 = 4
4² = 4 × 4 = 16
4² = 16

Well for one 16 in exponentinal form is 2 to the 4th power. Because 2×2×2×2=16 (and because 2 is written 4 times its 2 to the 4TH power) 2×2= 4
4×2=8
8×2=16
Note: there is more than one way to express this number in exponential form.

so using these "steps" you can figure out that say 27 in exponential form is 3 to the 3RD power
because 3×3=9
3×9= 27
