What do you believe Montezuma could have done differently to have avoided the fall of the Aztec Empire to Cortes?

Montezuma was too trusting and believed Cortez was a god just like the other Aztecs believed, if he wouldn't have been so trusting and fought the newcomers immediately the Aztec empire wouldn't have fallen to Cortez
