Describe the reaction you have to the works of Shakespeare. Why do you think his legacy as an author endures? In what ways may his impact be overstated? Think of the works from Shakespeare you have read or seen, including both live plays and films. What impact have those works had on you?

3. His works are universal and enduring, as are his characters.Shakespeare’s works are emotional, hilarious, pithy. But above all, he was masterful at imbuing his stories and his characters with qualities that audiences and readers identify with — Hamlet’s anguish, Ophelia’s distress, the enduring love between Romeo and Juliet.

1. In the context of Shakespeare, his plays were meant merely to entertain. This means that, during the 17th century, theatre was one of the main forms of entertainment. Furthermore, his plays spoke directly to the people and were not elitist in this sense.

2. Shakespeare's plays remain important nowadays because these are about topics that are still valid, such as power, destiny, love, death, etc. This demonstrates why Shakespeare's plays are still being read and enjoyed throughout the world. His work is transcendental.

3. Another important argument is the fact that Shakespeare provided English with an enormous amount of words which are still used nowadays. This suggests the influence Shakespeare's plays had, especially on common people.

4. The impact plays have on readers, such as Julius Caesar, Hamlet, Romeo and Juliet, etc. may be different according to each reader's experiences and knowledge. However, once the reader gets used to the language and to Shakespeare's style, he/she is able to enjoy it as it used to be enjoyed during the 16th and 17th century. In this sense, Shakespeare uses a very witty language that even manages readers to have a good laugh.
