The author is suggesting that how did they know what we must know with out knowing a page of ? it themselves. So some group of people needed to know something ( probably a book) and somebody knew what they needed to know without knowing a page of (a book probably) something without knowing even a page of it ( possibly a book, that has what the original group of people must know) them selves.
