This is what I wrote:

The author of “A Relay Race to Remember” uses foreshadowing to create tension in the story. The author describes how the pain in Malik’s ankle is getting worse and worse. The author reveals Malik’s thoughts. The reader can see that Malik is not so confident that he can win because of his ankle, and this makes the reader nervous for Malik. The author describes the pain very specifically and uses a simile to show how much Malik’s ankle hurt. This gives the reader a better understanding of Malik and makes readers think and debate whether or not Malik is going to win or not. Then the author unexpectedly turns the course of events and Malik doesn’t swim at all. Now the readers start to worry about Sean and if he will win or not. The end releases the tension and the readers are relieved that everything turned out so well.

Hope this helps!

Answer:

The author uses foreshadowing to create tension in the story by not letting the reader know what decision is Malik going to make.

Explanation:

During the story, great tension is created while Malik limped more and more during the swimming tournament.

He was the captain and the best swimmer in the team. Despite being very hurt, Malik told everyone that he was in perfect condition, but in his mind, there was fear and despair as the story progressed. That feeling is also transmitted to the reader, wondering how the tournament will end and what will happen to Malik's ankle.

Finally, Malik's team and their rival are tied and have to break in a relay race.

Malik wanted the medal of that last race very much and not being able to swim made him really sad, but he recognized that he really couldn't swim in that condition.

The tense moment comes to an end when he decides to let his substitute swim. Sean, who took a great advantage over the rival team, established a new record and took the medal home.
