Plessy v. Ferguson upheld segregation laws and made segregation the law of the land. Until this court case, states had laws about segregation, such as separate train cars for black and white, but were not enforceable across state lines. This court case now said that segregation, as long as it was equal, was constitutionally valid, and it became the law of the land until 1954.
