Stephen Douglas was politician and layer from Illinois. He was nominated by democratic party for the post of president in 1860 election but was defeated Abraham Lincoln. He is known for supporting the popular sovereignty. Due to his short frame he was nicknamed the "Little Giant". He was sent to the US senate by the Illinois legislature in 1847 and emerged as the national party leader during 1850's. He defeated Abraham Lincoln in the senate contest and the debates are famous as Lincoln-Douglas debates of 1858.
