I can tell you what I associate them with:
an extensive trade network around the Medditeranean
and
bringing the alphabet to Europe! they adapted other Semitic scripts to form an alphabetic script, and this was then adapted by the Greeks. Our roman script is a derivative of the Phoenician one!
