Northerners who moved to the South after the war, supposedly in an effort to get rich or acquire political power. Many White Southerners were dispossessed of their lands by Carpetbaggers and denied political power. Carpetbaggers sought allies with Scalawags and Freedmen to form the Republican Party in the South.They also helped to improve the Southern economy through helping blacks that were just freed from slavery succeed in life.
