The wars that the ancient
Greeks fought against the Persians, who were seen as savages or
barbarians by Greek culture, were also called Wars of Freedom. These
wars were supported, according to the Greek belief, by the Gods, who
were also Gods of Liberty, and this formed a link between Greek politics
and their religion. The Greeks, after the Persian Wars, or
Wars of Freedom, were strongly related to Zeus and Artemis, for they
protected the Greek Freedom, called Eleutheria, or the personification
of freedom. Being the ancient Greece where the
first experiment of human freedom was made, the mixture of religion and
politics around Freedom, was a very important element in the culture of
ancient Greece.
