During the early 1800s, Tecumseh, a leader of the Shawnee, tried to unite American Indian tribes west of the Appalachian Mountains into a confederation. Tecumseh considered that the land did not belong to a particular tribe. In reality, no one can be granted the land except for the Master of Life, the Shawnees' chief god.
Tecumseh thought that the only way that American Indians could gave back the land to the Americans if every tribe consented to it. Tecumseh desired to force the Americans to deal with all of the societies in harmony. Many American Indians denied to surrender their lands and end their alliances with the Americans.
