The Voting Rights Act of 1965 was the major piece of legislation that ended explicit African-American disenfranchisement in the South. This act held that any form of regulation that discriminated on the basis of race in the voting process was unconstitutional: this was a way of strengthening and enforcing the rights proscribed in the 14th and 15th Amendments.
