The child is at risk of cretinism. This is a disease marked by stunted physical and mental growth, mainly due to a lack of thyroid production on the part of the mother. A diet lacking in iodine (as iodide) can also be a culprit for hypothyroidism. The person may suffer from varying degrees of mental and physical impairment, depending on the level (and severity) of the hypothyroidism.
