|a + bi| = √ [(a^2) + (b^2)].


So, the absolute value of - 4 - (√2)i is

| -4 - (√2)i | = √ [ (4)^2 + (√2)^2 ] = √ [ 16 + 2 ] = √18 = √(9*2) = √9 * √2 = 3√2
