The general recommendation is not to use more than seven categories (that is, slices) in pie charts. That's how many slices you can have without confusing the viewer or creating a colorful visualization that tells us nothing. Pie charts are great for illustrating percentages. However, when there are too many categories, it is better to use a bar chart, which may easily deal with a few dozen elements.
